SHRM offers SHRM-CP (certified professional) and SHRM-SCP (senior certified professional) certifications. HRCI offers PHR (professional) and SPHR (senior professional) certifications, as well as an aPHR (associate) certification.

Most choose to do this through accumulating and submitting the required number of recertification credits to the certification provider. Credits are earned through completing professional development activities (such as by attending conferences or webcasts — convenient pre-approved credits) or demonstrating professional achievements (such as the implementation of new HR programs). Another option is to retake the certification exam.
