New research reveals that today's organizations are far more likely to emphasize hard skills training than soft skills training even though most human resources (HR) professionals view soft skills as more important.  Fully 86% believe soft skills are more critical than hard skills when it comes to long-term organizational success.

The free research report, Why Organizations Should Invest More in Soft Skills Development, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute partnered with Fierce Conversations, a global leadership development and training company, to investigate how HR professionals and organizations view soft and hard skills.

Not only do the majority of HR executives view soft skills as more critical, just over half believe soft skills training has an equal or higher return on investment when compared with hard skills training. Nonetheless, organizations are more than twice as likely to focus on hard skills training compared to soft skills training.

Additional analysis indicates that many managers are struggling with the soft skill of communication. Only one-third of respondents say their leaders are good or excellent at having productive conversations with their direct reports. Comparisons of companies that excel at communication versus those that don’t indicate effective communicators are also more likely to measure learning ROI and get better results from their managers.

“Organizations often focus on hard skills training because it tends to be easier to do. This research shows that soft skills are crucial, so it may be time for employers to figure out the best ways to effectively hone soft skills in the workplace,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “Meeting that challenge might well pay dividends for the entire organization.”

Migraine disease takes a heavy toll on employee well-being and productivity, but many organizations are still struggling with how best to manage employees suffering from the disease.

The free research report, The State of Migraine Disease in the Workplace 2021, is now available for download.  HR.com's Research Institute partnered with the not-for-profit health policy organization Aimed Alliance to investigate how employers perceive migraine disease, provide accommodations, and incorporate practices to help improve wellness and productivity.

The research, based on a survey of human resources (HR) professionals, indicates that  there is much confusion among managers when it comes to  migraine disease. Despite the World Health Organization (WHO) finding that migraine disease is the sixth highest cause of disability worldwide, only about half (48%) of HR professionals think that migraine disease can be considered a disability. Migraine disease often carries stigma, particularly among direct supervisors. The stigma is apparent with the fact that 40% of participants indicate that some supervisors think that employees who report migraine attacks are “faking it” or “exaggerating.”

Employers have their work cut out for them as far as educating and informing their management about the disease and how to help their employees suffering from migraine attacks. Organizations that are better at managing employees with migraine disease are also more likely to view it as a possible disability.

Only 56% of HR professionals agree or strongly agree that their organization does a good job of helping and accommodating employees with migraine disease. Only 1% of participants say migraine attacks do not impair employees’ ability to work, while many others say migraine attacks “always” (20%) and “sometimes” (66%) impair their work function.

“If not addressed well, migraine disease in the workplace can have an impact on a range of performance issues such as productivity,  absenteeism, presenteeism, and more,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.

Download the full report which includes key takeaways to help HR departments manage and develop migraine disease policies and best practices, including recommendations on accommodations, workplace wellness programs, and health benefits, to protect their employees and their organizations and improve productivity in the workplace.

Retaliation in the workplace is on the rise, yet many organizations under-prioritize retaliation prevention. Roughly one-third of organizations don’t even have an anti-retaliation policy in place. Retaliation is the most frequently filed job discrimination charge in the U.S., but current practices do not reflect this fact.

The free research report, Preventing Retaliation in the Workplace 2020, is now available for download. HR.com's Research Institute partnered with EVERFI, a leader in digital education on critical workplace culture issues, to examine the current state of retaliation in today’s workplaces and determine the most effective approaches to help mitigate workplace retaliation and misconduct.

Prioritizing retaliation prevention has a direct effect on the incidence of employee retaliation. Among those who believe preventing retaliation is not important or somewhat important, about half (49%) also say that retaliation occurs sometimes or often. In contrast, of those that do prioritize retaliation, only 17% say retaliation occurs sometimes or often.

“Retaliation is the most common form of job discrimination charges, but employers can take simple steps to prevent and reduce employee retaliation and avoid widespread damage to their business,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com.

Despite the pandemic and economic downturn, many organizations have been recruiting high volumes of employees to meet urgent needs. In fact, among organizations that have used high-volume recruitment methods, 40% say the pandemic has actually made them more likely to engage in such recruitment.

The free research report, The State of High-Volume Recruitment and Assessments 2021, is now available for download.  The HR Research Institute, powered by HR.com, conducted a recent study of human resources (HR) professionals to better understand the state of high-volume recruitment and assessments, especially in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

High-volume recruitment involves filling a larger-than-average number of positions in a relatively short time frame. Certain industries such as health care, delivery and shipping service, and grocery have engaged in such recruitment recently either via in-house recruitment department or with the help of external providers and partners.

Most organizations that do high-volume recruitment believe they are relatively good at it, but there is room for improvement. Only 32% of HR professionals strongly agree that their organizations are good at high-volume recruitment. Of those companies, most sometimes (53%) or always (26%) use external partners, especially staffing agencies, for some part of their high-volume recruiting.

Further analysis investigates the differences between companies perceived as successfully executing high-volume recruiting and those that are not. High-volume recruitment leaders are much more likely to outsource at least some part of high-volume recruitment, strategize and define this recruitment, and apply artificial intelligence (AI), metrics, and assessment tools.

“Although many organizations have experienced reductions in their workforce or hiring freezes, there are others that have had to adapt to huge demand and quickly hire in large numbers,” said Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “This can be incredibly taxing logistically, but there are some steps they can take to ensure better success.”

Download the full report which includes details on seven key takeaways to help HR departments gain insights into effectively executing high-volume recruitment under urgent demands.

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused organizations to take action in how they manage their workforces and recruitment processes.  The free research report, The State of Applicant Tracking Systems 2020, is now available for download.  The HR Research Institute, powered by HR.com, conducted the third annual study of HR professionals to better understand and track the state of recruitment and applicant tracking systems (ATS), especially in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In response to the pandemic and related events, the majority of respondents (78%) say their organization has prompted changes to their recruitment and talent acquisition action, with the most common being adopting virtual conferencing (89%) and virtual interviews (79%).  Organizations made a number of other adjustments as well such as implementing new technologies to handle remote hiring, modifying assessment processes, and reconfiguring their ATS.

Despite the utility of ATS, many HR professionals still say that their systems suffer from a number of weaknesses. Just 46% indicate that their ATS is good or very good at automatically matching candidates to the right job postings, and only 47% perceive their company to be good or very good at gathering and integrating employee referrals. At the other end of the spectrum, ATS are considered most effective at tracking candidates as they move through the recruitment process (81%).

“It's critical right now that employers understand how talent acquisition is changing with the phases of the pandemic so their business can stay agile and resilient," stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “Ensure your ATS can adapt to the changing trends such as compliance changes and video-interviewing, and be prepared for different scenarios with your hiring processes.”

Download the full report and infographic which includes details on nine key takeaways to help HR departments gain insights into understanding and leveraging applicant tracking systems to improve quality of hires and retention.
