Paramedics at Urgences-santé are denouncing their employer's "chaotic" management following the heavy snowfall in the area they serve. This storm was widely anticipated, but Urgences-santé did not see fit to have enough ambulances on the ground. "It is the paramedics who are paying the price for this poor planning; their breaks and meals have been cancelled since this morning and they are being forced to work mandatory overtime, which can last up to 16 hours in a row,"
denounces Claude Lamarche , president of the Prehospital Workers' Union of the Fédération de la santé et des services sociaux (FSSS-CSN).
Following its poor management of the situation, Urgences-santé triggered emergency level 3 this morning, the highest, allowing it to impose particularly difficult conditions on paramedics. "Is the day after a snowstorm really the most critical situation we have to manage? Why are we demanding a distribution of patients that unnecessarily lengthens transport times? Why are we also asked to respond to non-urgent calls? All of this adds to the completely chaotic situation we find ourselves in," explains the president.
A negotiation that goes nowhere
This situation comes as the union has been negotiating with Urgences-santé for several months. "We are trying to propose solutions to retain and attract paramedics to Urgences-santé, but it is because of decisions like these that people do not want to come work for us," laments Claude Lamarche . "After 24 negotiation meetings, Urgences-santé absolutely must do its part to allow us to move forward."
