The Pan Am Museum is proud to present Civil Rights, Race, & Gender Equity: Pan Am's Diversity in Flight, a free humanities event with a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Christina Greer of Fordham University and featuring personal stories from Pan Am veterans: Dr. Shelia Nutt (Harvard University, retired), Captain Perry Jones, Bonnie Jones-Moon, Esq., and Ed Moon.
This humanities event will be held on Monday, June 27, 2022 from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm EDT at the Pan Am Museum within the Cradle of Aviation center in Garden City, New York. This free event is made possible through a grant from Humanities New York and the National Endowment of the Humanities.
“We are most honored to shine a bright light on the topics of civil rights, race, and gender equity in the airlines because it is relevant now more than ever across industries today,” said Linda Freire, board chair of the Pan Am Museum Foundation.
“Civil Rights, Race, and Gender Equity: Pan Am’s Diversity in Flight” will explore how racial diversity changed the airlines, through the stories of African American employees. Produced in collaboration with Dr. Sheila Nutt, a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion scholar and founder of The Pan Am Blackbirds, this program will explore how the Civil Rights movement and the call for racial diversity and gender equity impacted the airline industry.
“Pan Am is more than a brand, it is a living legacy and in today’s world it is important for us to come together and celebrate how far we have come, and how far we have to go,” says former Pan Am stewardess, Dr. Sheila Nutt. “Pan Am’s unique history and standard of excellence influenced us from the moment we stepped into the historic Training School in Miami. And in return, we influenced the company and its policies. I’m excited for us to share our stories and reflect on the impact of Diversity and Inclusion. I have enormous gratitude for the Pan Am Museum Foundation’s tireless work to preserve the many stories of Pan American World Airways.”
“Civil Rights, Race, and Gender Equity: Pan Am’s Diversity in Flight” is a humanities panel discussion that will be the first part in a series of programs and museum exhibits around the topic of cultural diversity, race, and gender equity within Pan American World Airways. The airline employed people of color from all over the world representing numerous nations and cultures throughout its 64-year history.
The program is free and will include a box lunch.
