In 2020, 143 CEOs of Technology firms left their posts, down 33.8% from the 216 who left their posts in 2019. This was the second highest sector for CEO turnover in 2020 after the Government/Non-Profit sector, which includes government agencies, tourism and transportation authorities, Chambers of Commerce, education companies, charities, and foundations.
Thirty-two technology company CEOs left their roles at public companies. Companies tended to look outside for new CEOs in 2020, a continuation of the trend in 2019. Prior to 2019, CEO replacements were most often developed within the company.
