In most developed nations, retirees account for a higher proportion of the total population, while too few younger workers enter the labor force to replace them. The ratio of aged 65+ to 20's which is almost 1:1 today is projected to be 1:6 by 2050!
Global ageing require us to re-think our traditional “pre-retirement” programs which were essentially focused on finances. It is critical that we wake-up and shake up the mindset changing the conversation around ageing for individuals and organisations. Here's why:
- Ageing professionals want to feel empowered, productive, have purpose and contribute to society. According to a representative survey by Deloitte, in Switzerland, 40% of all economically active 50-64 year-old's would like to work beyond retirement age, though only few assume that they will actually do so and 30% of retirees say they would have continued to work if they had had the opportunity.
- Our economies need to make better use of the potential offered by the 50+ age -group, which is the largest labor market group in absolute terms with currently the lowest participation rate of any age group.
- Older workers represent a considerable untapped potential that could substantially cushion the impact of demographic change on the labor market.
How Individuals need to grow up….
Some people see retirement as a whole new world of opportunity, others approach it with a sense of concern. As individuals come closer to this phase of life they need to think far beyond finances and consider:

- Their personal Values, Passions, Strengths and Purpose
- Their Health and well-being – Physical, Emotional and Spiritual
- Their specific Financial situation and needs
- How they could optimize the years ahead
- How to plan for their transition
- Their new Life project!
How Organisations need to grow up….
Research shows that by 2030, many of the world's largest economies such as China, Brazil, Germany and South Korea will have more jobs than active employees to do the jobs – 2030 is practically tomorrow!
Organisations need to rethink “pre-retirement” planning to inspire a new mindset and embed it into a well defined strategy.This requires raising awareness to shake-up their company culture far beyond organising simple seminars. The mindset needs to translate throughout the organisation at every level as the 5-generation workplace becomes a reality and a “non negotiable” for sustainable success. This “grown-up” mindset can allow employers to:

- Show genuine concern for employees’ well-being
- Commit to supporting staff of all ages

Ultimately, proactive, up-dated, age management practices can contribute to staff morale by reducing concerns or fears while Inspiring new ideas, confidence and innovation. Supporting health and well-being, combating age barriers, motivating and promoting age diversity allow both employees and organisations to thrive!
