“We applaud the work that has gone into impacting these improved ratings across the board for cancer survival. There is much to be proud of.
However, what this does go to show is the importance for businesses to have an empathetic and practical policy on dealing with cancer in the workplace in force. More people are returning to work than ever before and they should feel valued and supported throughout their entire experience. It is an opportunity for businesses to go the extra mile in meeting their employees needs when they need them the most.
Businesses can really make a difference to their health and wellbeing policies by genuinely looking after their team with cancer care packages. There is also an additional carer load as employees are stretched to look after and care for their parent, spouse or friend.
We are finding that more and more businesses are taking a proactive role in supporting their employees and their families through cancer. Working with the NHS to provide effective diagnosis and treatment, and working with business to provide a rounded and complete support system for families and individuals. However, out of the industrialised nations the UK remains in the bottom percentile. Whilst we should applaud ourselves for improving we have not closed the gap. Smart and efficient connections in care aid early diagnosis and positive results. It is not necessarily new treatments which effect change but rather more consistent and effective working with what we’ve already got.”
