I've always heard the question, "Why do I need a resume?".

Usually, there's something else that follows that almost rhetorical question, "Why do I need a resume, I filled out the employers hour long application!?" or "Why do I need a resume, can't they just look at my LinkedIn profile?".

No matter how you slice it, there will always be a need to have a document that outlines your work history, knowledge/skills/abilities (KSAs), and experience. Now that most employers have some sort of applicant tracking system (ATS), there aren't many cases where you will need to have one in order to apply for a position online. Once you've filled in the application blanks and hit submit, you have placed your name in the applicant pool and that is that. But imagine you receive the long-awaited call to schedule an interview and find out the hiring manager has requested your resume and you don't have one. For a document that seems to plague so many, it certainly carries a lot of weight when it comes between you and a potential offer of employment. 

Like with many preventative things out there I simply say, it's better to have one and not need it, than to need it and not have one. No one wants to make an unfavorable first impression, and that's exactly what a resume is, your first impression to individuals involved in the recruitment process.
