U.S.-based employers announced 29,831 job cuts in October, down 3 percent from the same month last year, when 30,740 job cuts were announced. Through October, 351,309 job cuts have been announced, 24.6 percent fewer than the 466,352 cuts announced through October 2016. This is the lowest ten-month total since 1997, when 328,816 cuts were announced. Will job cut announcements remain low? The number of Chief Executive Officers at US-based companies leaving their posts rose 4 percent in October to 105 from 101 in September. The October total was 6 percent higher than the same month last year when 99 CEOs announced their exits. Challenger tracked 971 CEO changes through October, 6.9 percent lower than the 1,043 exits through the same period last year. The Challenger report on November CEO turnover will be released Wednesday, December 13, at 10:00 a.m. ET.
