    Challenges and Workplace Policies in the Digital Era


    Technology is becoming more personal with every day. It's no longer restricted to our homes - the last decade has seen technology become far more portable and personal than ever before. Slowly, it has crept into our pockets and seems to be determined there to stay. Our pocket-sized devices have evolved a great deal over the course of the last decade. Today, they are small personal computers that can be - and often are - used for work, yet most of the times they are used for personal entertainment. Which wouldn't be much of an issue wouldn't this personal entertainment invade the workplace, too.

    Procrastination in the digital age

    The world of mobile entertainment is attractive enough to sneak into the offices of today. It has been before the age of the smartphone, too, but with the right policies, companies could easily prevent their workers from accessing undesirable destination over the company's internet connection quite easily. Today, with the spread of smartphones and mobile broadband, workers can easily circumvent any such restriction. Most of the times, their escapades are limited to checking out social networks and such but there are times when the content accessed is not something that has its place at the office.

    With the spread of online casinos, people can now engage in online gambling wherever they are.     Can you make it go away?

    The short answer to this question would be "no". There have been several methods devised to prevent employees from wasting office hours but few of them have led to assessable benefits. Both extremes have been experimented with but neither giving employees the freedom to set their own deadlines nor setting tight deadlines was a good solution. Procrastination at the expense of productivity is not something that you can completely eliminate from your office but there are ways in which it can be reduced. One of the solutions proposed by productivity experts is to change the way projects are seen along with the attitude of the worker toward the project. If a project is broken down into small, manageable tasks, employees will be able to focus on them easier instead of being crushed by the weight of the whole project on their shoulders, which can lead to (you guessed it) procrastination.

    Simply saying that this or that is "against company policy" and that "there will be repercussions" will not do the trick either. The key, it seems, is to create an atmosphere where people enjoy to work and - more importantly - to find employees who are dedicated to the task at hand. That's easier said than done, of course...
