Leading IT Career Site, ITJobsWeb.com Comments on Tech Employment Trends from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report

The IT industry added 9,200 jobs in April, down slightly from the month previous, according to preliminary numbers released by the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Repor t on Friday, May 5, 2017.

“Employment gains in the IT industry are down by 13 percent in April over March, resulting in 1,400 fewer jobs gained,” said Jay Rollins, owner of ITJobsWeb.com, a leading IT jobs website. “The difference month-over-month is due to losses within the computer electronic manufacturing subsector, specifically in semiconductors and electronic components, which lost 3,200 jobs. Communications equipment and electronic instruments edged up slightly.”

The multiple sectors that form the IT industry now sit at 4,817,600 employed persons, which includes the Data Processing, Hosting and Related Services subsector, the Computer Electronic Product Manufacturing subsector, the Computer Systems Design and Related Services subsector, and the Management and Technical Consulting Services subsector. Together, the sectors have gained 144,000 jobs over the last year.

Computer Electronic Manufacturing lost 1,700 jobs in April and now sits at 1,035,000 employed persons with an unemployment rate of 2.7 percent. The subsector has lost 16,900 jobs since April 2016.
Data Processing and Hosting added 600 jobs in April, up from the 100 jobs recorded in March. The subsector now sits at 301,200 employed persons. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has only added 2,700 jobs.

Computer Systems Design and Management and Technical Consulting Services, both belonging to the Professional Services subsector, repeated growth recorded in March. The Computer Systems Design and Related Services industry added 2,600 jobs in April, while Management and Technical Consulting Services added 7,700 jobs.
