Marsha Forde is Director of Human Resources at Workopolis and recently shared perspectives on what Canada's largest platform for job seekers does to ensure their own people don't seek greener pastures. It all centres on culture and a continuous approach to employee feedback and employee involvement.
Here are some of the highlights from her remarks at the #TorontoHR meetup on recruitment and retention.
Looking Inside & Out
Understanding the shift in the external environment is important when you’re looking strategically at your approach to remain a competitive employer for both existing and prospective employees.
Establishing A Baseline
In March we rolled out Workopinion. This is the first time we’ve partnered with TemboStatus. After a gap of four years without an engagement survey, and the dramatic changes that were happening in our industry, we needed to hear from our people. Even more important than our scores was what we planned with the results. After communicating the results company wide, we identified four key areas of focus where we would commit to improving. And currently we have four action committees, made up of employees who have volunteered to be a part of the change driving these initiatives.
Keeping Connected
Tuesday Talks and bi-weekly All Hands Company Meetings encourage employees at all levels to get engaged and share key initiatives that have happened in the business. It keeps us all connected, and is not a top-down initiative. It also ensures that the owners of the projects are being recognized.
New Hires
We really try to ensure that new hires have an amazing onboarding experience. We have a solid onboarding program in place where we’ve received awesome feedback. In addition, we also conduct check-ins with new hires after 90 days to see how things are going and gather feedback. We’re all about learning and making improvements where we can.
In addition, we also have great policies and programs that are available to employees who are looking to develop and learn new skills or build on existing skills.
We thank Marsha for being a part of the #TorontoHR community. This is the first in The Practitioners series of ongoing conversations with HR leaders that get stuff done.
