    5 Things Employees are Looking for in a Company

    As a company looking for new hires, it’s important that you attract the right candidates. After all, it’s beneficial for you to hire the individual with experience who will be happy staying with your company for an extended period of time. While this sounds nice, the problem is that many companies don’t know the right way to recruit. Sure, you can spend your time looking for the individual with all the right attributes and skills, but if you don’t offer them what they want, you’ll have a very hard time getting them to accept your offer letter.

    Gone are the days when individuals are just happy to have a job. If you truly want to attract the best of the best, then you need to know what today’s employees are looking for.

    1. Flexibility

    Today’s workers are busy. People are involved in more groups and organizations, they’re involved with their families, or they are still working on pursuing more education or skill. This is just as important—if not more important—than finding a job. Today’s workers want flexibility in their job. They want to be able to work from home when it’s possible, and they want a flexible schedule that accommodates their life outside of work. They want flexible holidays and sick time that actually makes sense. Thanks to technology, giving in to this should be fairly easy. As long as your employees are being productive and working hard, you should be able to give them the flexibility they need. After all, if you give them what makes them happy, then they’ll be more likely to stick around.

    2. Insurance

    Even with the Affordable Healthcare Act, healthy insurance is expensive, and many people are looking for a job with the best benefits. Work with your HR team to create the best group health insurance plan that is attractive for your employees and makes sense for your budget. If you can ensure your employees that their health and well-being, and the health and well-being of their dependents, is at the forefront, you’ll have a better chance of landing that skilled individual.


    3. Collaboration

    Leadership is everything, and if you have poor leaders or managers who like to hover, you’ll find yourself losing employees left and right. Today’s workers want to collaborate on projects and feel important. They want a say in how things are done, and they don’t want to be micro-managed for the duration of their career. Make sure that your leaders understand the type of workplace you want to project. Highlight creativity and collaboration, and understand that there’s not just one right way to do something. If you give your employees the collaboration and creativity they crave, they’ll be happier working for you.

    4. Growth

    Not many people dream of starting a job and ending their career in the exact same position with the exact same responsibilities at the exact same salary. If you want to attract the right people, then you need to ensure that your employees have the opportunity to grow. This can be done in a variety of ways. Maybe you offer to pay for classes or opportunities where they can expand their skill. Maybe you promote from within instead of hiring from the outside. No matter what you do, make sure that you give every employee the opportunity to expand their skill and knowledge. Doing so will keep them around your company for a very long time.

    5. Perks

    image03Although it’s not entirely important, offering some type of perks can help you attract better talent. For example, maybe you offer employee discounts at a variety of local companies, or maybe you pay for their cell phone bill or car payment. Maybe you offer a unique vacation package or offer a strong paternity/maternity leave. If you can find a way to give your employees something they can’t find anywhere else, it will make it harder for them to leave.

    Today’s employees aren’t just looking for the company with the best paycheck. Instead, they want to know they’re being cared for and given every opportunity to grow and explore. By offering things like flexible schedules, strong benefits, collaboration, and growth opportunities, you’ll find that your company is filled with dedicated and hard-working individuals.
