US-based employers announced 48,207 job cuts March, 22 percent fewer than the 61,599 job cuts in February. It was the lowest monthly total since December, when 23,622 were announced. Through the first quarter of 2016, employers announced 184,920 job cuts, up 32 percent from the 140,241 cuts tracked the first three months of 2015. The first quarter saw 76 percent more job cuts than in the final quarter of 2015, when 105,079 job cuts were recorded. The report on April job cuts will be released by global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. on Thursday, May 5 at 7:30 a.m. ET.

Turnover among the nation’s chief executive officers rose in March, as 101 CEO departures were announced, up 16 percent from 87 in February. The March total was 6 percent higher than the same month a year ago, when announced CEO departures totaled 95. So far this year, 319 CEOs have left their posts, 7 percent more than the 299 CEOs who left during the same period last year, and 8.5 percent more than the last quarter of 2015. The Challenger report on April CEO turnover will be released Wednesday, May 11, at 10:00 a.m. ET.
