For many, holiday job searching begins online. Better Business Bureau® of Fort Worth and Tarrant County, Inc. warns holiday job seekers to exercise caution when searching online classifieds. Scammers are in full swing with fraudulent job postings aimed at gaining your personal information or your money.
One scam email we saw this month advertising seasonal job openings at Target. It listed available jobs ranging from warehouse workers to cashiers to sales managers, paying up to $18.00 an hour. All you have to do, the ad states, is click “Apply Now” and enter your zip code.
In the case of the Target job scam, the company has little to no web presence and the email traced back to China. If you follow the link, it pushes you through several menus with pop-ups, and then asks for personal information. Clicking through, you may unknowingly be downloading malware onto you device. BBB warns consumers that by submitting your personal information, you may open yourself up to risk of identity theft.
Always exercise caution when job searching online. It’s best to do your own research and verify the web address is connected to the company. Use the following tips to help keep you and your information safe this holiday season.
Identifying an Online Job Scam:
Jobs being offered without an interview
High pay for minimal or no experience
Offer comes from a third party using a free email service (Yahoo, Google, etc.)
Identical job posts can be found in different cities or by different companies
Poorly written job descriptions or logos that appear amateur
Upfront costs to apply for or accept a job
