Under the AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act), websites for organizations with 50 or more employees must be accessible. One of the main ways that people people with disabilities access company websites is through keyboard navigation.
Using a mouse is something most computer-users take for granted. But for many people with physical impairments, each click takes concious effort. For many others, using a mouse would be impossible. When it comes to the accessibility of your website, keyboard navigability is a big issue. Here is a simple test that you can do to see just how difficult your site may be for some people to access:
Step 1: Go to your website.
Step 2: Click on your home page.
Step 3: Let go of your mouse. Don’t touch it again.
Step 4: Using only your keyboard try to get to your company’s “Contact” page.
