Here are Perks, we find that taking a couple walks throughout the day is great exercise and provides the boost of energy needed in order to focus on daily tasks. A majority of my colleagues here at Perks also take part in mid-day exercising. We have bikers, runners, and weight lifters that use their lunch breaks regularly to fit in afternoon health sessions.
We also have Xee, our "office mascot". The dog walkers in our office find that walking our company dog, Xee, is always a nice refresher. Going for walks help us clear our minds, think, and reset.
So, what exactly are the benefits and effects of mid-day exercise routines?
According to a 2012 Huffington Post Healthy Living article, Scientists have discovered that participating in some sort of fitness activity during the work day can not only increase job stamina, satisfaction, and employee engagement-but it can also enhance productivity. The same article states that cardio exercise is a great option for those who need a creativity boost, while less intense workouts such as yoga can give you the energy to nod off that early morning fatigue.

“Body Temperature goes up a few degrees midday, warming muscles and potentially enhancing workout performance.”

Now that’s the kind of motivation we all need to change up the typical routine: 30 minute lunch, 30 minutes exercising. It’s possible-and who doesn’t want to have a better, more effective workout?
Along the lines of motivation, if you are in a managerial position you have the ability to promote such activity by a variety of simple methods that can fit any budget, including but not limited to:
1) offering gym memberships to employees
2) providing a list of resources for local fitness classes
3) implementing a department-wide/company wide wellness challenge
Morale of the Story: There are numerous benefits of mid-day exercising, and its effects on productivity and employee engagement are not to be underestimated. With that said, I challenge each and every one of you to start a new daily routine involving some sort of exercise. Anything you’d like. Your body and your company will thank you.
