     Ahhh – Independence Day. Truly, a great American holiday representing a pivotal point in history. Independence is such an important part of why this country is successful, but it’s also a grossly underestimated behavior that drives success in teams in every company across this great land. Teamwork shmeamwork! Who needs collaboration when you can get it done all by yourself?
    You know I’m British right? In fact, I’m sitting in Britain right now as this blog is being published. I don’t plan to leave the US out of protest around the 4th of July or anything like that (although, last year’s march through the neighborhood in my red-coat turned out to be not quite as festive as I had hoped). I simply enjoy the different perspectives on life you get by traveling through different countries and cultures.
    Teamwork is often hyped as a key cultural tenant for many organizations, and yet we would be lost without independence. I don’t know about you, but if you make me work in a team every hour in the day, it wouldn’t take too many days before I started my own revolution. No, we must allow our team members the independence that some of them crave in order to get their work done. Sometimes you just have to dig your foxhole, shut the door and crank through the work. Many roles might even benefit from employees with a primary habit of independence vs. just occasionally.
    The challenge comes sometimes when you’re the only independent employee in a team of collaborative empire builders. Teams have a tendency to reject the outliers that don’t work in a common way. If you’re in this situation, then you need to remind yourself that your behavior is what gets the work done (and probably supports the rest of the team). Make it known that this is your strength and use examples to prove that (without you) the team would suffer as a whole. Stand proud through the night, approach your goals gallantly … ok, now I’m off track a bit.
    You get the picture though. This independence day, make sure you recognize the great achievement that this country suffered for, and also embrace employees that embody this same behavior to drive success for your team! Me? I’m truly sorry I won’t be here to celebrate with you; the independent spirit is one the things I love about America, and I suspect my red-coat will get a little dustier this year because of it.
