    The Benefits of Getting Healthy for Only One Day


    Why a One Day Commitment Can Guarantee Success 
    I did it again this week. I didn¬タルt really exercise one time. I chased my toddler around, climbed up and down the stairs with my one year old about a hundred times, and spent a lot of time outside. But my goal lately has been to get in a 30-minute workout each day that is just for me. Yet I keep putting it off, and I don¬タルt really know why! So (while procrastinating my workout once again), I decided to do some research on why I never want to work out¬タヤand I found a really interesting and motivational strategy that I¬タルm definitely trying, TODAY.
    Tell me more.
    It seems that if we want to make healthy behavior changes, the normal go-to method is to pick some long-term plan or structured routine that will give us weeks and weeks of behavior changing experiences: 7 day workouts, 2 day cleanses, 40 day diets, year long gym memberships. Before anyone decides that they¬タルre going to start living a healthier life, they first have to decide that they¬タルre ready to make a long-term commitment¬タヤand let¬タルs face it, that freaks people out!
    What if I told you that there¬タルs a better way to guarantee you¬タルre successful in meeting your goals of changing any healthy behavior? It¬タルs a time-tested method that has helped people to break bad habits and engage in healthier ones for decades¬タヤone day at a time. Yes, it¬タルs the premise behind AA, and it makes a lot of sense.
    In reality, even when you make a commitment to be healthy for a week, a month, or forever, you¬タルre just making up a story about the future. The only thing you have absolute control over is what you do right now, in this very moment. So make this commitment, and this commitment only, today, right now: I will engage in healthy behaviors. It¬タルs amazing what you¬タルll be able to accomplish when today, right now, becomes, every day and always.
    What are the benefits of just one day of health?
    1. For someone who smokes: Not smoking for one day will save you $10-15 and re-oxygenate your blood.
    2. For someone who eats poorly: One day of eating well will help reduce your caloric intake, regulate your blood sugar, and begin to break the body¬タルs addiction to unhealthy foods.
    3. For someone who doesn¬タルt exercise: One day of exercise can make you feel more alert, give you energy, release mood enhancing endorphins, and burn extra calories.
    4. For someone who spends a majority of the day sedentary: One day of sitting less and moving more will make you more accurate at your job, increase oxygenation to your muscles, help control blood sugar, and alleviate neck and back pain.
    The best benefit yet.
    The most important benefit of taking your health one day at a time is that you¬タルre much more likely to get healthy that way. Psychology teaches us that people are more likely to be successful at changing bad habits if they make small incremental changes, rather than one big one. We¬タルre also more likely to stick with a healthy behavior if we're successful with it. Failing at spending the next 40 days in the gym can discourage you from trying again, but going to the gym today can make you go again tomorrow. We also get a chance to try different things and learn what works for us and what doesn¬タルt. 
    So give it a try. When you wake up tomorrow, pick one thing you¬タルve been dying to do better and just do it. Don¬タルt focus on anything else but doing it for that one day. And when you wake up the next day¬タヤwell, that¬タルs up to you.
