It’s all too easy to talk without actually saying anything useful – a sales pitch with no message, a company mission statement that doesn’t lay out clear objectives as to what the ‘mission’ actually is, and so on. Concise and jargon-free communication cuts through the hyperbole, make your organization more trustworthy and consequently people (customers or clients) will be more willing to do business with you.
However, we all have varying degrees of ability when it comes to effective communication. While some may be confident speaking to a crowded room full of delegates, others may feel more at home using the power of the written word to get their point across. But everyone involved in a business will need to physically talk to customers at some point, and for some a little additional help and guidance can be of enormous benefit.
Communications skills encompass not only your interaction with customers, but also with your fellow co-workers and employees. Effective management also comes about as a result of effective communication, so to use your skills to their best advantage you need to ask yourself a few questions about how you communicate with those around you.
