Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo!, recently stated “We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.” All Yahoo! employees who are telecommuting will be required to join the rest of the staff in the office by June 1. As with many workplace concerns, there are two sides to this issue.
The Pros of Remote Workers
One of the advantages for the remote worker is increased productivity. The employee has the flexibility to do the work required in an environment in which they may work best. It allows them to customize their personal schedule while still maintaining employment. The added savings of money for gas, lunch, daycare and time commuting to work definitely adds up for the employee.
It is estimated that the cost for the remote worker at Yahoo! who now needs to come into the office everyday is over $1,000 a year in gas, food and acquiring proper work attire. If child care is a factor, that can push the cost to an average of $10,000 a year.
