Denying generation Y or millennial employees the opportunity to stand out and earn recognition is a sure way to destroy their motivation. A recent article in The Wall Street Journal discusses the trend of more and more organizations bowing down to the demands of generation Y. "As millennials enter the workforce, more companies are jumping through hoops to accommodate their demands for faster promotions, greater responsibilities and more flexible work schedules".
While it is true that by 2020 generation Y will comprise more than 40% of the workforce, as a member of generation Y, I don't think that organizations must bow down to our demands. While my generation is often labeled as entitled, we do understand that we need to work and put in our time in order to get ahead. In return, we expect the opportunity to stand out and to be recognized for our accomplishments.
Millennials grew up during a period of rapid change and technological advancement. This may be why we expect the same in our careers. However, organizations do not have to give in to these expectations so immediately to retain and acquire the best millennial workers. Simply recognize the hard work and talent of your millennial workers and provide them with opportunities to advance in their career down the road, you might be pleasantly surprised by the results.
