AUSTRALIA OPENS SMARTGATE TRUSTED TRAVELER BENEFITS TO U.S. GLOBAL ENTRY MEMBERS
On November 1, 2012, the U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) announced that Australia’s SmartGate automated processing system would be open to members of the U.S. Global Entry trusted traveler program.
SmartGate uses face recognition technology and ePassport readers to securely and efficiently process arriving passengers through passport control. Like Global Entry, SmartGate offers pre-approved, low-risk travelers a faster alternative to the long lines for inspection by Customs & Border Protection officers.
Members of U.S. Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI trusted traveler programs who are age 16 or older are eligible to use the SmartGate program. There is no additional application process required. The ability to bypass normal inspection lines can save valuable time for the business traveler, particularly during the busy holiday travel season.
