A recent survey found that 53 percent of workers believe that switching employers is vital to the advancement of their career. Less than one third (31%) of respondents believe that company loyalty will pay off and doubt that their career will benefit from remaining at their current job on a long term basis.
In fact, two thirds (69%) of respondents say they feel confident they’d be able to negotiate a similar or better position with a new company if they looked for a new job tomorrow – despite lingering economic uncertainty and a shaky job market. Workers in professional positions (i.e. marketing, sales, finance, IT, Law, etc.) were the most confident in their prospects, with 74 percent of these workers believing that changing jobs is advantageous to their career.
The survey also found that 49% of workers are always on the lookout for new job opportunities, regardless of whether they like their current job or not. This suggests that the attitudes of modern workers are changing to become more autonomous and empowered towards their career options.
With one third of the workforce already working in contingent, project-based jobs the findings of this survey suggest that ultimately, even workers in so-called “permanent jobs” also think of themselves as contingent workers who give 100% to their employers…… but only until something better comes along!
