In settling claims, such as drawing a legal challenge to a discharge, a common practice would be for the employer to agree not to challenge unemployment benefits, as part of the settlement of this workplace claim. This is no longer valid under Minnesota law. The new provision states that an employer may not agree not to contest unemployment benefits in exchange for an employee quitting, taking a leave of absence, or withdrawing a legal change to a discharge. Such agreements are void. Minn. Stat. § 268.192 (7).
