I am so thrilled about this brand new book PRACTICE PERFECT: 42 RULES FOR GETTING BETTER AT GETTING BETTER by Doug Lemov, Erica Woolway, and Katie Yezzi. It is just out with my publisher Jossey-Bass, so I guess I consider this book a cousin, especially since I was fortunate enough to read an advance copy for peer review. PS There is an excellent foreword also by Dan Heath. The book is elegant in its focus and simplicity: Practice is the key to getting better at anything, but not just any practice. Intelligent practice is the key. Practicing the right way of doing things AND practicing, per se, the best way. Here’s what they suggest about HOW TO PRACTICE THE BEST WAY in a section titled “Encode Success”: “Engineer practice activities so that the success rate is reliably high; if the activities are especially challenging, ensure they end with a period of reliable success so your participants practice ‘getting it right.’ Check for mastery constantly. If activities don’t result in reliable success, simplify temporarily so that participants start successful; then add complexity.” Brilliant!
Stay strong!
