IT Cos struggle with growing ‘bench’. (News report in TOI today)
Decades ago a systemic sin was conceived in the glass ceiling chambers and executed to perfection, when the leading IT Cos institutionalized the idea of bench.
The commoditization of human talents got baptized then, for narrow business ends.
Like retail trade, talent was made available both across the counter and also as abundant fresh stock in the go-down called the Bench (sic).
Innovative term of reference was given to these go-downs; Gyms, clubs, tennis and basket ball courts, multi cuisine café, library, e-learning centre and many more. Further under guise of deliverance of a high standard of work life those innocent talents were blissfully basking in the glory and holding the Management in the highest pedestal.
Till the day dawned and reality had its big bite.
Today the stock is in decay and some of the fresh orders are being cancelled and/or deferred.( please read this as a metaphor )
Well, the question that looms large: “is it for this they grew tall only to be used like a trade commodity for no fault at all?”
The decadence of their narrow design is in decay and stinking today.
The least that some of these IT giants can do is to look at the situation of the transitory receding of business with more empathy and respect; long term rather than as short term knee jerk reaction,.
My heart goes out to those soldiers who are all laced up at the Boot camp.
They say there is a silver lining and light at the end ….one is eagerly awaiting to see the light of the day as soon.
