I'd like to share my recent article in Advances in Developing Human Resources (link below).
In the study, meaningful work characteristics beat out 30+ other work characteristics (bundled into 7 dimensions) as correlates and predictors of high employee engagement, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, stay intentions, and low burnout.
Meaningful work includes:
- Self-actualizing work, which enables people to realize their full potential and become whom they believe they were meant to be in life.
- Social impact, which is having a positive impact on people and things, and doing good things in the world through one's work.
- Work that enables people to fulfill their purpose, values, and life goals.
- Work that gives people a sense of personal accomplishment (i.e., making progress on worthwhile things).
Not only can these things be measured on employee surveys, but they can also be provided to employees more easily than expected.
