As I look at the slate of projects I am working on now I am struck by how widespread the learning transfer problem really is. Consider these as examples:
--senior executives at a health care provider
--managers at a construction materials company
--capacity building training in a developing country in Africa
--a school for at-risk high school seniors
--mid-level employees at a professional association
--engineers learning interpersonal skills at a major company
--car dealers and their staff learning new skills
--baristas in coffee shops learning interpersonal skills
And my list could go on and on.
The simple fact is I have yet to find anywhere that transfer of learning is NOT an issue. It is a universal problem that spans ages from high school through late adulthood, from major companies to nations, and across every type of organization and learning content.
So if you AREN'T worrying about transfer of learning, my question is what makes you different? Are you just in denial about how urgent this problem is? Are you ignoring the warning signs that you have a problem? Is it time to join other organizations and countries and start a major initiative to improve learning transfer?
Think about it.
