Perhaps you are over 50, just lost your job, and have qualms about going on job interviews. What if they don't hire me because they think I'm too old? you wonder. Take heart. There is a way for Boomers to succeed in the job market. Here are some tips.
1. Avoid including too much information on your resume. Don't add outdated, irrelevant information to your resume. Tailor your resume to the job you're applying for at hand.
2. At the interview, avoid giving a laundry list of your top 100 achievements over te past 30 years. Show that you're fun, so you don't let the interviewer feel like they're working with their mom or dad!
3. If the interviewer is younger than you are, avoid acting superior with the attitude that you have a lot to teach them. That's a turnoff. Instead, let them know if you have experience working or volunteering in a multi-generational workplace.
4. Avoid winging the interview. If you're not sure how you come across, enlist the help of a 20- or 30-something colleague to do a test drive with you. Or better yet, try to get an interview with an employer you're not the least bit interested in working with, for practice.
5. And lastly, if you're applying for a job that is obviously below your experience or tax bracket, let the interviewer know why. For example, maybe you've had a high-stress career and now you would like to work on something that is less of a headache.
Whatever you do, don't give up! There's room for Boomers in the job marketplace!
