“African Americans or Women need not apply”.
Thankfully in today’s society that is an appalling statement and an unimaginable sight.
In the world of HR and Recruitment it is a job requirement to preach equality and fairness in the workforce…. or is it?
The National Employment Law Project released a report showing otherwise. The report concludes that recruitment and hiring policies that outwardly deny employment to the unemployed are being used in companies of all sizes, with a variety of job boards and under an array of staffing agencies.
NELP examined four of the United States most prominent job boards, including Monster.com and Careerbuilder and identified more then 150 ads that clearly asked that applicants be currently employed.
USAction in support of their greater goal to build an economy and middle class that works for all, sent a letter to executives at Monster.com and Careerbuilder requesting they reject advertisement that discriminates against the unemployed.
The letter states, "Although we understand that the discriminatory wording of these ads was written by the employers themselves, discrimination against the unemployed is no more justified than ads that employers historically placed excluding the hiring of people of color or women or people of certain religions… You would presumably not accept ads that discriminate on race, gender, religious belief, etc. Why discriminate against the unemployed?"
