Safe hiring expert Lester Rosen, an Attorney at Law and President of nationwide background screening provider Employment Screening Resources (ESR), will present a session titled ‘Legal and Effective Reference Checking and Education Verification’ at the 2011 Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Annual Conference and Exposition on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. “With hiring decisions becoming more critical in challenging economic times, verifying past employment and education and obtaining references has become very important,” says Rosen, author of ‘The Safe Hiring Manual,’ the first comprehensive guide to employment screening background checks. “Unfortunately, falsifying or inflating employment and educational accomplishments has become a significant problem for employers.”
Since legal limitations also create barriers for human resources professionals when obtaining and giving past employment information, participants in the session – which is worth 1.25 General Credits – will learn how to navigate through legal and practical roadblocks when both obtaining and proving past employment information, as well as how to spot phony credentials and fake degrees.
In addition, participants will explore why employment references create legal issues for employers and strategies for dealing with requests, learn why phony education credentials are problematic and how to spot degree mills, and learn effective and legal strategies to verify past employment and education accomplishments of applicants.
Rosen is a frequent presenter nationwide on safe hiring issues and his speaking appearances have included numerous national and statewide conferences as part of the ‘ESR Speaks’ background check training program. He was the chairperson of the steering committee that founded the NAPBS, a professional trade organization for the background screening industry, and served as the first co-chairman.
The 2011 Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Annual Conference and Exposition will be held from June 26 to 29, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
