School’s out, and companies are hiring graduates left, right, and centre. These Millennial grads are savvy, tech-savvy and ready to begin, for the most part. You are looking for top performers for your company. But will they fit in with your company? Grads are also asking themselves the same question: "Will I fit in with this company?"
If your interview practices are outdated, that will certainly turn a savvy graduate off early in the recruitment process. Don’t be too formal. Don’t give them skills assessments to fill out. Avoid telling them “Don’t call us; we’ll call you”. That is so ‘80s!
Instead, communicate culturally; for example, as part of the interview process, give them a tour of the office, engage them, showcase the company’s flexibility. Your approach should be “Let’s show you what we’re all about”
Now, back to the original question. How do you know if a candidate is a good fit for your organization? Here are 4 tips:
1. Look for passion. Grads don’t have a lot of work experience behind them so look more towards where they are headed, their ambitions, their knowledge of the field.
2. Conduct informational interviews. Contact schools and set up speaking and presentation opportunities on campus. This is an inexpensive and great relationship-building activity.
3. Offer flexibility. The Millennial generation is more concerned with having a flexible work environment than getting high salaries. So offer them the chance to telecommute, extra vacation time, a sense of ownership, and flexible work hours.
4. Look for self-management skills. Look for how they motivate themselves and how they manage their lives.
In conclusion, tailor your recruitment to the next generation. More than anything else, Gen Y is looking for a good fit, and they are asking around for which jobs are hot, a good fit for them, and which are authentic. Nowadays you just can’t fake authenticity.
