The events of 9/11 impacted the world. They also impacted me personally on a number of levels because I’m constantly in the air. Less than one year after that terrible tragedy I flew into Washington DC’s Reagan National Airport. I had flown the same route hundreds of times in the past, but this flight was different. All was relatively smooth until about 40 minutes before we were to land in the Nation’s Capital.
The pilot’s voice came over the intercom with the instruction that if anyone needed to use the restroom or stretch, then they should do it now because the crew had been instructed “to implement the following new rules: 30 minutes outside of Reagan Airport everyone must remain seated until the plane has landed. If anyone even stands up during the final 30 minutes of today’s flight, the pilots and crew are under strict orders to turn the plane around and land in Ohio.” With this one small adjustment in the landing procedure at Reagan National Airport, the airline industry had significantly reduced the chances of terrorists replicating the 9/11 tragedy.
Small adjustments consistently implemented over time have a significant effect! Ray Kroc, the founder of Macdonald's increased his sales by more than 30% just by saying, “'Would you like fries with that?" Making small behavioral adjustments to tune up your personal and cultural hungry spirit gives you a better chance of achieving the success you are pursuing.
