    Managing the Twenty-Something Employee


    The twenty-something generation is a special bunch. Many set out to become entrepreneurs from the get-go, while others choose to build a career with a company. This generation is more motivated by education than by money, and respond very well to acknowledgment that they are doing a good job.

    Here are some tips for managing your young employees.

    1. Reward them for doing a good job. Publicly thank them in front of your group, explaining what they did.

    2. Include them by asking their opinion on an idea.

    3. Give them a challenge on their first day of work to make them think for themselves. Give them decision-making authority on a matter, letting them figure it out on their own. Once they complete the objective, give them feedback.

    4. Wish them happy birthday on their birthdays. They will be glad that you remembered.

    5. Show that you are interested in long-term rewards as they tend to admire those who focus on long-term rewards and will be inspired to do the same.

    6. Set short-term projects and goals, as the twenty-something generation have short attention spans. Set weekly goals for the end of each week. Setting quick turnaround times will make them feel more productive.

    7. Don’t keep incompetent or lazy employees around. The twenty-something generation will end up resenting the less competent colleagues.
