We've always heard that it's easier to find a job when you already have a job. But times are a changing and the tables are a turning.
A survey conducted by Yellow Cat Recruitment in London shows that unemployed job seekers are more likely to find jobs over their employed counterparts. Eight-two percent of the unemployed job seekers reported having a job interview, compared to 51% of employed job seekers. Fifty-two percent had an interview in the past month compared to 32% of the employed, and 30% of the unemployed had two interviews compared to 19% of the employed.
Given the economic downturn where many strong candidates lost their jobs, there's a shift in attitude on the part of employers. Being unemployed is no longer an obstacle to finding a new job as they have a valid reason for being out of work. Employers are no longer skeptical about unemployed candidates.
But I'm sure the unemployed will disagree with these findings based on their own experience and sets of challenges. Here are some tips on putting your best foot forward if you are unemployed.
1) Stay in the loop. When you're employed, that helps keep you in the loop. But if you're out of work, being out of the loop can be a hindrance for a job search. So keep up with the latest trends by subscribing to industry publications and following industry leaders on Twitter and LinkedIn.
2. Maintain your confidence. Use your available time to volunteer, take a class, keep fit, etc. These are all ways to keep your confidence up. After all, when is a better time to do all of this?
3. Believe that you will get another job, and have gratitude in other areas of your life. This will make you feel more energized and hence make you more attractive to employers.
