Most people who work in large corporates will be very familiar with attending fun team building away days. In the UK we tend to describe social team bonding as team building. While technically they are different it's a matter of semantics - I have always felt that in the UK we are uncomfortable with the word 'bonding'.
A well structured fun event can deliver very powerful results if organised with the desired outcome in mind. The word fun does not mean that the event needs to be trivial or not deliver useful and measurable outcomes. One of the benefits of using fun in business is that it makes learning much more natural.
Film making is one example of an event which can be used to achieve specific outcomes. For example, a group can be divided into teams and each given the task of creating a three minute film featuring three company values. Each team is given a digital camera, props and a trunk full of costumes.
The end result is always powerful; full of humour and all important 'in jokes' which make the films personal and meaningful. We screen the films in the evening on a big screen, after a little professional editing, and teams get a copy to take away and watch again.
So, the teams have great fun and the objective of social team bonding is met, but the company values are imbedded in people's minds almost by osmosis.
Film making is not a new idea in the corporate event market offering. At The Team Building Company we have more than 70 different ideas and specialise in coming up with new ideas for sophisticated and experienced clients. Often, however, I listen to what a client needs to get from their event and Film Making is the perfect solution. You might say that it's one of my favourites.
This sort of thing should be mandatory.
