Time to cut local and central government salaries across the board, as a permanent reform
The revelation that David Cameron’s special adviser, Andy Coulson, is paid a salary of £140,000 is hardly helpful to a government that is trying to persuade the country of the need for belt-tightening. Coulson’s remuneration is at the upper limit of what is allowed, which prevents special advisers earning more than the Prime Minister. Presumably his salary, in accordance with civil service rules, was awarded on the “no pain, no gain” principle, whereby an adviser’s income is assessed for the 12 months preceding his appointment and that determines his starting salary.
