Stability replaces job-hopping as employees dream of jobs for life
A recent Global Workforce Study by Towers Watson identified that more workers are replacing their job-hopping ambitions with dreams of a job for life. The 2010 Global Workforce Study, which surveyed 20,000 employees in 22 countries, shows that the workforce is craving more stability and job security with a third of respondents saying they wanted to work for a single company for their entire career and another third saying they wanted to work for no more than two to three companies.
“The economy has obviously made more workers leery of switching jobs and organizations,” says Adam Alexander, Vice President of MasteryWorks, a leader in Career Development. “Employees want to know ‘what’s in it for them’ at their organization. They want to keep learning and get better in their fields. They want to see the options they have in the future. And, they want to craft their own career development plan for future opportunities at the organization.”
For over thirty years, MasteryWorks has helped employees explore career options. Alexander contends that the traditional approach of promotion is limited in a flat world. “Growing in place (enrichment) through negotiating more responsibility, participating in new projects, developing new skills, finding an expert mentor, or observing experts in their field is the most common and easy-to-provide option in a flat world. That is why more and more employees see enrichment as their most desirable career option. They like their current roles, but want to become better masters of their professions.”
