A CareerBuilder Canada study shows that most Canadians, six out of ten, live paycheck to paycheck just to make ends meet.
Some workers tap into their savings account, but others have a hard time saving anything at all. More than half of those surveyed say they don't participate in retirement or 410(k) plans. More than 35 percent don't save anything each month, while 25 percent save $100 or less, and 12 percent save $50 or less.
Workers have, therefore, been employing various tactics to make ends meet, such as finding a second source of income, or by keeping a tighter budget.
Here are some survival tips:
Keep track of where you are spending your money. Small things such as your morning coffee, a newspaper purchase, or a cab ride can add up. When you can see where your money goes, you can easily decide where to cut back.
Take on a second job that you can handle on top of your current job. A great way to do this is to start an online venture that can be done from home after work hours.
Find out from your HR department what resources are available to help with saving on monthly expenses. Some companies offer transit reimbursement, for example, or retail discounts.
The survey was taken among Canadian employees who worked full-time in the private sector.
