Lessons Learned: March 9th -Never Give Up.
In today’s economy it’s tough out there. Many great people (Julie Denardo, Marcia Harlow, just to name a few) are available. People have a dream to change the HR world, as seen with the HCM Investors Forum, where such great CEO’s as Frank J. DiBernardino (Vienna Human Capital), Aassiq Haq (Alumrise) and Dylan Schleppe, Co-founder and CEO (Recruit2Mobile) have really cool ideas but money is tight and evaluations are pitiful. Models are transforming (i.e., paid job postings migrating to pay for performance and targeting advertising) yet the HR industry still has so much potential.
Soon (not soon enough) the stock markets will stabilize, employment numbers will be positive again, and housing markets will start to grow.
Whenever I am depressed in the moment I ask myself this very important question. Do- I think I will be in a better place in two years, or in five years? The answer is always yes. So I envision how do I get to this place, instead of focusing on the short term or where I am now. It’s a powerful thought as it takes you right out of the minute and lets you dream about the future.
We can’t give up, we need to keep investing, innovating, adapting and learning. So many of our models are just screwed up. We need to reinvent ourselves. Why do we continue to do things that just don’t work well and not focus on improvement? From payroll fraud (significantly growing), to benefit fraud http://www.thestar.com/News/GTA/article/595512), to mass layoffs, it’s ugly out there. But I am so excited because there is so much hope and so much need for improvement.
