It is extremely important to make a good impression at work, and dressing well most definitely helps in creating a smart, professional demeanour. However, these days, the dress code for work has become more relaxed, while still retaining an attitude of professionalism. The category of appropriate attire for work has certainly broadened from the days when all had to wear tailored suits at the office.
In the workforce of the past, women in particular felt the need to wear full suits and appear exceptionally polished and sophisticated in order to compete with their male colleagues; and be taken seriously at work in an attempt to shatter the glass ceiling. In today’s workforce, however, it seems most women are more confident that they are viewed on the same level as their male coworkers, and so do not feel as much pressure to look more authoritative.
These days, women and men are opting for clothes that are more practical and functional for their duties and work environments. The dress code at most workplaces nowadays is usually business-casual. Many work environments and companies are adopting the philosophy that when their workers are comfortable, they are more likely to be happy at work and be more productive.
