One never really knows where you may end up when you get on a Southwest Flight. As I write this I am en route to LA (Burbank) for the upcoming LA HR Star event. Although my ticket clearly states Baltimore to Burbank, upon boarding I found out I am actually stopping in Phoenix. You gotta love Southwest for their customer service, their flexibility in booking and their humour. In all the flights I take (which are over 40 a year) they never fail to make me smile and appreciate great customer service. I only wish they flew into Toronto, so I could spare the two hour drive to the Buffalo airport.
With over 400 HR and hundreds of user conferences, the average HR professional could spend their entire year just going to conferences. Most attend only one or two a year, so the competition to get traffic to the events has never been fiercer. One event company that we are honoured to work closely with is HR Star. Although not well known, they do four one-day conferences a year in each of Atlanta (May 2nd), LA (March 28th) San Francisco (July 18) and Cleveland (July 25). Each of these shows is free admission to HR staff, offers great content and networking opportunities. Braden Albert, the CEO of HR Star, does an excellent job of running these events and is an absolute pleasure to work with. If you are local to any of these markets I highly suggest you attend and bring your staff with you. They will also get four HRCI credits for the day.
Plateau, a vendor who was once one of the top vendors in the learning management space, has done an excellent job in moving their product suite to the integrated talent management space. They have done this by building out their own Enterprise Performance Management product and with their recent acquisition of Nuvosoft for compensation management. In addition, they have launched a product, i-content, aimed at the SME market that bundles content on an as-needed basis, sold as a SaaS service and in partnership with Skillsoft. I-content currently includes all the Netg content, Books 24/7 and traditional Skillsoft content.

Although I still have a good foot of snow in our front yard, the daffodils are starting to pop their heads up in our backyard, and summer is definitely starting early. With extremely favourable weather I have been able to start my greenhouses earlier than normal, hoping that I can get a start on some of the over 300 Dahlia bulbs I try to preserve every year. Although HR is my business, gardening is definitely my passion. Each year I look forward to going to the local buyers’ market (with a 40-foot U-Haul) and loading up on new annuals and perennials. I love watching new flowers appear each day and showcasing some of the loveliest Dahlias I have ever seen. I love watching my five kids play in the pool or play tennis, while I attend to the local gardens. It is a great time for reflection and deep concentration and I often have my best business ideas while I am relaxing in the gardens. If you have any gardening tips, please share them with me.
P.S. For those of you who asked, I can no longer catch any of my kids on the slopes. Mind you, they do spend most of their time in the trees, but we should never give up so we are off to Denver to close the hills around Easter where I will try to catch them again.
