What is a corporation´s duty to prevent suffering?  Does an organization have one?  If it does, does this duty apply to animals?  Nature?  The planet?  What are its limits?  Are there any?

This website (http://www.wegmanscruelty.com/) and the video it links to came to me a short while ago.  It´s worth seeing because it raises these questions.  Can an organization be truly ethical to the people who work for it, the communities it serves, its business partners and its customers if its business practices - or at least some of them - are fundamentally unethical? 

The Wegmans Corporation has been named America´s best-run private company, one of its most admired.   And in its efforts to reduce costs and feed our society´s insatiable appetite for abundant, limitless supplies of cheap food - and particularly animal-based food - it vertically integrated part of its food operations.  The video on this site shows what this has meant to the millions of egg laying chickens owned by Wegmans. 

The meat industry is one based on wholesale institutionalized cruelty.  This has been undeniably documented around the world.  The Wegmans video is only part of this testimony, this witnessing.  What is fascinating about this video is how it juxtaposes a corporation lauded and admired for its role in the community and its practices in business with its treatment of the animals that fuel its industrial processes.  

Can an organization truly be an ethical servant of its employees, its business partners, the community it resides in and its customers when institutionalized cruelty is a core component of its ability to compete?
