Hiring employees that are legally eligible (authorized) to work in the United States is a responsibility that has taken on increasing importance for employers. Yet reviewing paper documentation that confirms an employee´s employment eligibility can be a burdensome task for employers.
In an effort to help companies deal with the administrative challenges associated with employment eligibility verification, the federal government introduced the Basic Pilot Employment Verification program. Under the guidance of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services the program provides companies with access - via the Internet - to Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security databases. In 2004 the federal government expanded the program to provide companies in all 50 states with access to the databases.
Online resources are also available that help guide interested companies through the registration and implementation process.
