Earlier this month, US President Joe Biden let the ban on foreign workers visa, in particular H-1B, lapse, as the notification issued by his predecessor expired on March 31, 2021.
With the expiry of this proclamation, the American diplomatic missions overseas can now issue H-1B visas for US companies that would like to bring technology professionals into the country.
In June 2020, former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a proclamation to suspend entry of applicants for several temporary or "non-immigrant" visa categories, including H-1B, to the US. He argued that these visas presented a risk to the US labor market during the economic recovery.
The U.S. economy is under severe crisis, especially since 2020 when millions of Americans lost jobs due to the Covid-19 pandemic. With the unemployment rate at 6.2% and nearly 10 million Americans still looking out for a job, we will have to wait and watch what sort of repercussions this move will result in. Amidst the arguments in favor of the ban and against it, there is this one country that has been vouching on its immigration policy and sees it as the means to successfully overcome the economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and create more job opportunities in the country.
“The pandemic has had a significant impact on Canada’s economy, and immigration is crucial to addressing it. Immigration has got us through the pandemic – and will also help us get out of it. Canada’s short-term recovery and long-term prosperity rely on immigration,” says Marco Mendicino, Canadian Immigration Minister.
In an exclusive interaction with HR.com, Marco talks about the vital role immigrants play in the Canadian economy, how the country is planning to attract more skilled workers to its tier II provinces and Canada's future plan for welcoming immigrants.
Jason Fry, in his article, talks about the 5 Things To Know When Managing Ongoing Eligibility To Work For Non-U.S Citizens.
