With 2020 behind us, we turn a hopeful eye to a healthier 2021.  But even with vaccines on the horizon and lower virtual learning curves, we are still challenged by a disconnected workplace. As you prepare for yet another video conference, you may be asking yourself, “How can I continue to effectively motivate and lead my team when I am exhausted?”

To help answer this question, consider the skills in the Actor’s Tool Kit: Being Present, Staying Connected, Setting Intention, Remaining Curious, and Being Authentic. These skills are fundamental to creating a powerful performance — on stage or in business.

Why Theatre?

Minouche Shafik, the Director of the London School of Economics, says “In the past jobs were about muscles, now they’re about brains, but in future, they’ll be about the heart.” We have entered that future. Although the ability to synthesize and analyze information will always be a vital skill, Shafik emphasizes that what makes us human - being real - will be our strongest competitive advantage.

And that is where theatre comes in. Theatre is created through the study of the human condition, observing what makes us tick. Theatre artists take what they learn from that study and, using their emotional intelligence, create something powerful that causes people to think, feel, and respond in very specific ways.
Alliance@work aims to bridge the gap between the power of theatre and the wonder of learning.

What Is Alliance@work?

A professional development training program from the Tony Award winning Alliance Theatre. Using theatre-based learning strategies, Alliance@work helps people meet their business objectives by improving their communication and collaboration skills, enhancing their emotional intelligence, and creating greater professional presence.

What Are Theatre-based Learning Strategies?

The theatrical process of rehearsal (probing, testing, refining) is the key to unlocking potential.  By adapting that process to the workplace, Alliance@work gives participants the opportunity to explore concepts “on their feet”, discover how to connect those concepts to their work, and practice how to practically apply what they’ve learned to their job-specific goals and objectives.

How Can Alliance@work Help My Organization?

By offering engaging and meaningful learning and development, not the traditional check-the-box training, Alliance@work can help you answer the big questions, such as:

  • How can our people stop being boring explainers and create messages that stick?
  • How can our leadership show up with more presence and purpose?
  • How can our leadership manage diverse teams with more authenticity and empathy?
  • How can we meet maintain our creativity, collaboration, and culture while working in isolation?

Who Is Alliance@work Designed for?

For any company that wants to increase its competitive advantage by being more present, connected, curious, intentional, and authentic. Architects, sales teams, attorneys, professional service providers and even nuclear plant managers have benefited from this training. Alliance@work helps people at all levels in an organization, from the c-suite to front-line employees.

How Has Alliance@work Helped its Clients Expand Their Ideas Around Storytelling?

An economic development department in a Fortune 500 company wanted to build on their success of encouraging industry leaders to relocate their operations to Georgia. In order to maintain their competitive advantage, they needed a compelling way to share their data and make their pitch.

The Alliance@work solution:

  • Assess the team’s understanding of using story as a communication tool.
  • Increase the team’s ability to use story to sell Georgia.
  • Coach the team to tighten and sharpen their pitches to prospects.

The Outcomes:

  • The organization redesigned its physical space so that when prospects visited the office it was a storytelling experience from entrance to exit, and
  • They enhanced communication/storytelling toolkits used for prospect visits, promotional events and trade shows.

How Has Alliance@work Helped its Clients Enhance Their Leadership’s Professional Presence?

One of the world's largest professional services firms knows that choosing the right people to promote to partner is vital to the short and long-term health of the organization. They needed to make sure that their senior managers could successfully cultivate and build an executive presence.

The Alliance@work solution:

  • Develop internal definitions and frameworks of executive presence.
  • Coach to practically apply concepts in real-life client situations.

The Outcomes:

  • A pool of prepared and ready managers for promotion.
  • Enhanced people-first culture

How Has Alliance@work Helped its Clients Take a More Emotionally Intelligent Approach to Management?

The learning and talent development division of a Fortune 500 company recently experienced significant downsizing across each regional manager’s division. The client needed to improve their managers’ ability to coach their teams in these challenging times.

The Alliance@work solution:

  • Provide emotional intelligence frameworks and language.
  • Share the rehearsal process, specifically the language a director uses to guide a diverse cast to discover solutions and work together to implement those ideas.

The Outcomes:

  • Greater sense of team among the regional managers.
  • A shift in the culture where people felt heard, understood and reengaged.

Break a Leg!

These proven theatre techniques will help you refill your tank and bring your best self to work in 2021.  Alliance@work looks forward to helping you not only navigate through our current challenges but to arrive on the other side with even more creative and collaborative culture.
