Welcome to the December issue of Leadership Excellence. The year 2020, as we all know, has been a year of disruption and transformation. From education to jobs, health to wealth, social life to private life, every area of life has been affected. Changes that we never expected to see in the near future has happened over a week’s time. Especially in organizations, with the transition of work from physical spaces to virtual spaces, this year has been intensely difficult, stressful and complex. And for leaders, how they have been dealing with the crises can be considered as the ultimate test of their capacity to lead.

However, it is noteworthy that leadership boundaries have been expanded overnight, and a focus on people and their well-being has noticeably increased. The whole definition of leadership seems to have changed!

Leaders aren’t there just to do something. They’re there to be something and it’s all about balance, says Chris Lewis in his article, We Need To Reframe What We Call Entrepreneurship And Leadership. This interesting article talks about what leadership should be all about and why we should reframe it.

While much of the world is still shuttered, employees are looking at others to provide the much-needed support and guidance to make the most of a difficult situation. In a time where everything is changing daily, mentorship can provide the support, confidence, and assistance an employee needs to succeed and thrive. To know how businesses and individuals can offer mentorship right now, read Brett Kaufman’s article, Can Mentorship Offer Support In A Pandemic World?

If leaders don’t walk, talk, and breathe a collaboration mindset, a couple of things are bound to happen. For starters, people will keep their ideas to themselves. They will be afraid of being shot down. Leaders need to believe that collaboration reaps better outcomes than debate and conversation. Read Jim Haudan's article, The Send Button Is Stuck And The Receive Button Is Broken, to learn about the three mindsets you need to adopt.

A startup’s employees are its most valuable assets. But whether you’ll be able to inspire the best in them hinges on whether the company’s leaders can successfully instil a mindset that empowers the organization at every level. Check out four leadership tips that can help your company go the distance in Sammy Rubin’s article, 4 Essentials For A Successful Startup Journey.

In brief, we have learned a lot from this crisis about leadership in a disruptive world. To learn more about the leadership trends that can help us out of the crisis and beyond, check out this issue of the magazine.
