HR.com recently spoke with Manit Parikh, Country Head India, ELSA Corp about the importance of soft skills in the workplace today.

Q: How important are soft skills in the present scenario?
Manit:
The reason that speech and AI within speech is on the upswing defines the pressing need. Soft skills are personal attributes that influence how well you can work or interact with others. These skills make it easier to form relationships with people, create trust, dependability, and lead teams. Though we might choose not to accept.... lack of basic English restricts our communication with many as it is a basic business language.

Q: How does a lack of soft skills, especially communication skills, affect talent availability in India?
Manit:
Appropriate soft skills play an important role in a successful career as well as during social interactions in society. Good verbal and written communication skills are essential in order to deliver and understand information quickly and accurately. Statistics have proven that lack of command over soft-skills is a factor affecting employability.

Q: Where is the disconnect and what is causing the shortage?
Manit: There is a huge need for training the trainer, teachers need to be trained first. Corporates need to emphasize on soft skill training and educational institutions need to focus on communication skills more than just grammar.

Q: How does poor communication skills affect employee engagement and productivity, and in turn a business?
Manit: Chinese whisper, a lack of understanding leads to errors, both internal and external. Not being able to communicate what is needed for business causes loss of revenue and reputation. The impact of poor communication in the workplace can be felt across the board, even leaking externally to customers. At the individual level, employees feel disconnected with no clear direction from management, leading to low satisfaction, engagement and performance. At the department level, silos keep teams from working together efficiently and the absence of a clear vision and goals from the top can lead to unsatisfactory performance.

Q: How can companies address the talent shortage caused due to a lack of soft skills?
Manit: Training is key. Inhouse staff which is the current standard and additional support to trainers in terms of AI. At college/university level - spoken English/ communication skills need to be emphasized upon. Pure academic knowledge doesn't necessarily mean employability, they should be able to communicate their strengths.
