How do you become the best of the best? Michael Jordan? Wayne Gretzky? Tom Brady? GiannisAntetokounmpo? Yes, the Greek Freak is no doubt currently one of the best of the best in the NBA. But wait, how did this happen? Sure, it takes a certain amount of natural talent. But in the end, it takes desire, dedication, and a great deal of discipline. Discipline to get up every day and train, and practice.

How does a boy of Nigerian decent and raised in Greece come to the NBA and basically dominate the paint? At the start of the new millennium Giannis helped his family eat by selling watches and sunglasses in the streets of Sepolia, Greece. Giannis started playing competitive basketball around 2011. He practiced and trained with his older brother constantly until in 2013 the Milwaukee Bucks drafted him as the 15th overall pick in the NBA draft. Each year following his rookie year in the NBA Giannis got better through hard work, practice and training. Now in 2019 he may very well end up the MVP of the NBA.

Just like professional athletes, professional sales people need to have the same discipline to get up every day and train. Sometimes it is as simple as reading a book or checking out your favorite blog. But in the end, you will never become the best of the best without training.

One key factor to becoming the best of the best is to make sure you are working on every part of your game. Giannis is mostly known for his mad skills in the paint, but did you know he leads the Bucks franchise in points, rebounds, assists, and steals per game. In fact, he is in the top 10 in the NBA in many of these same categories proving he, like the best of the best, is a player that can do more than just score, rebound, or shoot 3-pointers.

When you look at your sales team do you have someone that has mad skills at closing? Or perhaps discovery? Maybe you have a leader at prospecting. The superstar sales professional needs to have many skills to succeed at their job. When we break it down the great sales professionals have a solid foundation for success. They understand their product, the problems it solves, and the economic impact it will have on a customer’s financials. The best of the best has the dedication and the discipline to continue working on their game.

Becoming the best of the best requires you to take on some of the training yourself. As I mentioned earlier, read a book, visit a blog, or watch a video every day. There are thousands of options to hone your selling skills. If you work for someone else, it is their responsibility to help you with other parts of your game. Just like the Bucks invested in Giannis, your organization should invest in you. They should provide courses like product training, competitive analysis, financial acumen and negotiations training for example. Your employer should also surround you with the resources to help you succeed. Michael had Scotty, Giannis has Kris, Steph Curry has, well a whole team of superstars. But that is beside the point. To be the best of the best you can’t do it alone (ala LeBron James on the Lakers).

The bottom line is this: Training is critical to success especially foundational training like product knowledge, financial acumen, and competitive analysis. Strive to be the best of the best and good fortune will shine upon you.
